Ready position drill for youth baseball

Updated

In short

Ready position is a beginner-level baseball drill. Ready position is what you do before every single pitch. Fielders who look fast are usually just the ones who started ready. It builds reaction, fielding and first step. It needs glove, and can be done in a backyard. This page lists 5 numbered steps and 3 common mistakes with their fixes. The demonstration video is AI-generated.

How do you do the ready position drill?

  1. Feet wide

A little wider than your shoulders.

  2. Bend your knees

Get your weight onto the balls of your feet, not back on your heels.

  3. Glove out front

Hands out in front of your body, glove open and low.

  4. Small hop

As the pitch reaches the plate, take a tiny hop so you land right as the ball is hit. This is what makes fielders quick.

  5. React

Push off in the direction of the ball on your very first step.

What are the most common ready position mistakes?

  • Mistake

    Standing straight up

    Fix

Get in your stance before the pitch, not after the ball is hit.

  • Mistake

    Weight on your heels

    Fix

Stay on the balls of your feet so you can move either direction.

  • Mistake

    Hands hanging at your sides

    Fix

Keep them out front and ready.
