Crossover drill for youth basketball

Updated

In short

Crossover is a beginner-level basketball drill. A crossover is how you change direction fast. You push the ball low and quick from one hand to the other, and your whole body goes with it. It builds ball handling, change of direction and weak hand. It needs basketball, and can be done in a driveway. This page lists 5 numbered steps and 3 common mistakes with their fixes. The demonstration video is AI-generated.

How do you do the crossover drill?

  1. Get low

Bend your knees into an athletic stance. The lower you are, the faster you can move.

  2. Dribble hard

Keep the ball below your knee. A low dribble is a fast dribble and it is much harder to steal.

  3. Push it across

Snap the ball across your body to your other hand. One bounce, close to the ground.

  4. Move your body

Your shoulders and hips go the same way as the ball. If only your hand moves, nobody is fooled.

  5. Go

Push off your outside foot and accelerate. A crossover only works if you actually go somewhere.
