Juggling drill for youth soccer

Updated

In short

Juggling is a beginner-level soccer drill. You will not juggle in a game, but juggling builds the touch you use in every game. It teaches your foot to be soft and your eyes to track the ball all the way in. It builds touch, balance and focus. It needs soccer ball, and can be done in a backyard. This page lists 5 numbered steps and 3 common mistakes with their fixes. The demonstration video is AI-generated.

How do you do the juggling drill?

  1. Start with a bounce

Drop the ball, let it bounce once, then flick it up with your laces.

  2. Use your laces

Contact the flat top of your foot with your toe pulled up slightly.

  3. Small and soft

Keep the ball around waist height. Big kicks are much harder to control.

  4. Stay relaxed

Soft knees, loose ankle, small steps to stay underneath the ball.

  5. Count and beat it

Count your best, then go for one more. That is the whole game.

What are the most common juggling mistakes?

  • Mistake

    Kicking too hard

    Fix

Little taps. Waist high is plenty.

  • Mistake

    Stiff ankle

    Fix

Relax it so the ball does not fly off your foot.

  • Mistake

    Only using your strong foot

    Fix

Once you can do ten, start alternating feet.
